Powerful portraits of the Liberians who beat Ebola

To help humanize the overwhelming statistics, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer and senior staff photographer at Getty Images, John Moore, visited an Ebola treatment center of the organization, Doctors Without Borders in Paynesville, Liberia. At the treatment center, survivors spoke about the brothers, sisters, husbands and wives they lost due to the disease. They also spoke of recovery, stigmas they continue to face in their villages and renewed hope.

"

Three years later, a new girl sits cross-legged on your bed.
She tastes like a different flavor of bubblegum than you are used to.
She opens up a book that you had to read in high school, and a folded picture of us falls out of chapter three.
Now there are two unfinished stories resting in her lap.
Inevitably, she asks, and you tell her.

You say: I dated her a while back.
You don’t say: Sometimes, when I’m holding you, I imagine the smell of her vanilla perfume.

You say: She was younger than me.
You don’t say: The sixteen summers in her bones warmed the eighteen winters my skin had weathered.

You say: It’s nothing now.
You don’t say: But it was everything then.

it really worries me how this society does not respect mental health. you go your physician for a physical health check up. why is it so strange to see a mental health clinician for a brain and emotions check up? and don’t you dare say that emotions aren’t important. emotions underlay our behavior, and that’s incredibly important.

i hope i get the chance to live in a world where mental health is respected as much as physical health.

This is honestly the best poster I have found in a while supporting breast cancer awareness. I am honestly so sick of seeing, “set the tatas free” and “save the boobies”. There is no reason in hell a life threatening, life ruining disease should be sexualized. “Don’t wear a bra day,” go fuck yourselves. You’re not saving a pair of tits, you’re saving the entire package: mind, body, and soul included. Women are not just a pair of breasts.

The Bronx is about to become the only borough without a bookstore.

jet-lafayette:

Just let that sink in for a second.

Not only will we be the poorest and fattest borough, we will also be the least literate.

Thanks to the wonderful mall developers at Prestige Properties, the Barnes and Noble in Bay Plaza is likely to close by the end of this year.

While books are out of fashion thanks to e-readers, this store was almost always packed with curious, intellectual individuals looking to read or study. It also had a large section for educational toys for kids.

We cannot let this happen. Please sign the petition and reblog this post!

Hey everyone! Please sign this petition that I co-created to keep the Barnes and Noble in my area open.  This is the only secular bookstore in the Bronx and its closing would be devastating for our borough.

So let’s tell Prestige Properties to invest in the children of the Bronx by fostering a love of reading at an early age.  Let’s tell them that it’s important to provide a quiet, clean place for research in this community.  And let’s keep one of our most important cultural centers open for all Bronxites to enjoy and share knowledge with each other.

Do Not Close the Bay Plaza Barnes and Noble!

Am I really about to cry over a fictional couple at work?
